A few months ago, I started using Beth Minardi Luxury Color Care Products. While ”testing” a new line of hair extensions, I decided to ombre the hair. Being that some factories use textile dye to color the hair, I never know what I am working with. The end result was beautiful Indian Summer hair and DRY AND DAMGED ends.
I learned that the hair extensions were a sham! Just another company with false promises of amazing hair. BUT I also learned that Beth Minardi Pre Wash ROCKS! I mean seriously, it brought the extensions back to life. I use System 3.
I recently was traveling and forgot my products and quickly realized that nothing else works on my hair.
The Pre Wash is applied on dry hair only. I now pre-treat all the custom clip-in hair extensions with Minardi Pre Wash. While doing a relaxer or root touch up, I use the Pre Wash on the mid shaft to ends. This product rinses beautifully without leaving any residue or weighing down the hair.
I am a big fan of Beth Minardi. She is a true artist! It should be no surprise that she has formulated a line that repairs and conditions.

And we are back...
While overseas, our limitations to social media and blogging were unexpected. Happy to be home and on our own soil. That said, our trip to China was eye-opening. Everyone was more than accommodating.
Our days were filled with factory tours, meetings and eccentric lunches. My diet consisted of tea and rice. I was not as open minded with eating as my associates. I made the mistake of mentioning that I wanted to have “authentic” chinese food. My own stupidity, thinking that authentic meant fried rice and Sweet & Sour Chicken. I felt like Andrew Zimmerman from Bizarre Foods; without the desire to actually eat anything in front of me.
Years I have viewed photos of so called “Factories”. I wouldn’t say it’s a “factory”, however, it’s more like a workshop employing over 150 men and women. Each piece, made by hand. An art form, in it’s own way!
I have waited since 2002 for this journey. This trip was a dream come true for me. My eyes began to water as soon as I witnessed men and women working with their hands, creating something that means SO much to me.
I shared smiles with the workers. Of course, doing business in China is unlike the norm. I have spent years living in Japan and Hong Kong. I am familiar with the Asian business culture. A female business owner with 20+ years of experience doesn’t instantly receive respect. Nor did I imagine I would. I am highly educated and experienced within the Hair Extensions Industry. I know when I am being lied too. I remain humble in those thoughts, as I still appreciate the time that was given to me by each and every person.
I flew 17 hours for a reason. To network, meet, create and learn. I did not come to China to be arrogant. I wanted to make sure that if I partner with a particular company, that I would be employing fairly. Fair trade is not just for large companies. It’s for a small business entrepreneur, like myself, to make sure that workers are happy and enjoying their daily grind. It’s a karmatic approach to business. I witnessed smiles, lunch breaks, laughter and great working conditions. I also am wowed by how closely men and women work. Literally inches apart. Dare I say that in America, we require so much more personal space?!
With specific demands, my focus is stronger than ever. I have created a career for myself, with raw materials. The material just happens to come from a human. And the story of women surrendering their hair to “God” and it making it to my salon is something that I cherish. The journey from point a-z of hair extensions is unique. The amount of labour that goes into each and every piece is mind blowing. Consider the initial source and all the steps it takes to produce quality hair extensions…it makes complete sense why hair extensions are a luxury item. To have the best raw material, the source is first considered. Followed by how many hands actually work and process the hair. It would be fair to say that each extension goes through 10+ pairs of hands before it arrives to the salon! Even the beginning stages of storage to assure it is remy is a vital process that takes time.
With that, I have a whole new UBER sense of respect for a industry that I am already in love with.

Remy Hair Extensions and Shingles on a Roof...
We've all seen and heard about Remy hair by now. For hair extension veterans, it would seem as if this name just appeared from nowhere. Hence the name "Remy" is one of the most confusing titles among human hair consumers.
The hair extensions industry exploded with one word..."REMY".
Remy is sometimes spelled remy OR remi.
Remy. no dictionary results. dictionary.com
Remy. Remy is a name of French origin, and is associated with the Latin name Remi. Wilkepedia.
Non Remy is what you see on temple floors. The hair has been cut off the head and is collected lose. This typically is the less expensive hair you may find in plastic bags being sold at low end beauty supply stores. Non remi hair is most commonly available.
To eliminate these tangles, they remove the cuticles through an acid bath process. However, acid bath processes are extremely damaging since it melts the cuticles of the hair, making it more prone to breakage and dryness. The hair also have lost its shine.
Non-remy hair is satisfying at first sight. But after only 3-4 washes, the dry and matted texture of the hair comes out. It will have a rubbery texture, and gets drier with every wash. Non-remy hair is the source of numerous complaints for human hair extensions. In the long run, you will end up shortchanging yourself.
Non-remy hair is like shingles on a roof! They all should be going in the same direction. IF NOT, friction happens and the hair swells.

Internationally Known!
It takes two to make a thing go right!
Would the REAL hair extensions junkie please stand up?!
Here I go...the 9th year developing and creating my own brand! What took so freakin long?! Trust me when I say...cracking the code to this niche market is a challenge.
Hardest part? Finding product that rocks! Developing a brand that is fierce enough that it creates positive relationships?! YES! I want to develop a brand that keeps the clients coming back to the stylist~client retention is the name of the game. And by creating a brand that is amazing, well...its a win/win.
I have been lied too, spent tens of thousands of $'s. Years of packages, Skype dates, emails and bad english/chinese conversation. I haven't given up. The more disappointed I became the more I new that I was on to something. It has fueled my obsession to find the mother ship of hair!
That said. Hair extensions are a 2 part recipe. First, the Remy hair. Second is the bond that holds the loose bulk strands together.
We source Remy hair directly from Russia and temples of India(photo below). We have also bought directly from Collectors in Brazil. Kilos of virgin hair have arrived to our offices, gorgeous colors as light as level 7.
We have touched some of the best and worst hair in the world. According to every International Sales rep, their hair is the best hair! It's been a painful process and yet so exciting.
Formulating the keratin bond required us to learn everything and anything about keratin. Keratin is Protein. There are several types of low quality keratin, keratin wax(thumbs down), keratin polymer, Italian Keratin and so on. Pre-tipped is always a keratin or poly-eurathane bond/tip. Both are ways of keeping loose hair together in the extension, so that it can be bonded to the natural hair. Being that most bonds are patented it makes it difficult to discover the magic combination of "keratin", and to make a bond that is different than the others. Our brand mustn't have any of those cheap keratin bonds attached to our hair extensions. To my surprise, there are various large companies that sell fusion hair extensions that have polymer in the bond. Polymer is a fancy word for...glue. YIKES! Polymer is made from white glue. It is the less expensive way to make a keratin bond but it is the first way to damage the natural hair.
Great hair extensions are about amazing quality Remy hair AND method of attachment. It is vital that it doesn't damage the integrity of the natural hair, undetectable appearance, quality and longevity.
We are happy to announce that we are in the final phase of creation. The method of attachment is vast. A full line of keratin bonds, tips, tapes, clip-ins and lace front wigs.
As we visit our factories, although we can't publish the names and places, we do intend to publish photos of our trip. Our hope is that one day we will be able to provide all bonding to be done in the USA. But for now, we will travel 26 hours each way! Formulating, creating and designing an all methods brand for Professional Stylists.

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover
As I sit here at the airport...I look around and take in my surroundings. I quickly notice a lady reading the latest Victoria Secret Catalogue and another reading Cosmo. Earlier I was in the magazine shop and fixated on the covers of what seemed to be hundreds of magazines. Most covers have a beautiful female with perfect skin, body and hair.
Such a big shoe to fill. The need for females to live up to what appears to be the norm. To fulfill what we, as women, think men want. Or even, what we wish we would look like. A challenge when females have to work full time jobs, take care of children, membership in the PTA, non-profits and so on...
The models on 90% of the magazines are wearing Hair Extensions. False lashes, fake tan and YUP hair extensions.
The photo below is from back stage at a Victoria Secret Fashion show. The top portion of the hair extensions is sprayed with a colored power to give the appearance of a natural root line and also for undetectable extensions.

I also see men that have very little hair, no hair, tons of hair and one man...earlier...who had a toupee. OH I can spot them a mile away. How is it that he can't see what I can?! YIKES.
My reasoning for comparing men to women is this...and please don't hate on me for saying this. But, the facts are facts. Men CAN get away with what woman can't. If a man is bald, overweight and can make a lady laugh...chances are...he is not a lonely man. If he has a small or large resemblance of a "crome dome" aka "bald spot", BUT has cash in his wallet and a bit of wit, charm and knows how to treat a lady...HE IS NOT LONELY.
I digress. If a lady is bald, overweight and funny...she IS lonely. She probably will not leave her home. Men are not attracted to her. IF he is attracted to her, and there are few, he is one of those amazing men that loves her for her completely. The reality is black and white.
We live in this so-called perfect world. Those that grace the covers of magazines would hardly be noticed at the grocery store. Victoria Secret models do not have all that hair. I have seen the videos of what goes on back stage. I am fascinated with the whole "concept" of what Victoria Secret hair represents don't get me wrong! But what I am saying here is this...men think, society thinks...that that is her hair. They think that her low protein diet, all the time under heat lamps, wear and tear from numerous photo shoots, heat tools and over cleansing that her hair really is THAT shiny, THAT full and THAT long! WOW.
If I were to take the layers off. She would also have freckles (like most of us from sun damage), wrinkles, cellulite and much thinner dare i say shorter hair than what you would think.
For years I have said "I am like Sampson in the Bible. You cut my hair, you take my power!".

Stickin To It!
A few years ago, well lets just say...when the economy sank...I began a search for great quality hair extensions that wouldn't break my clients budget. My business was not effected with the negativity of the economy. Of course I hate to hear stories of anyone losing their job! However, when we look good ... we feel good! Unfortunately women are still losing their hair, still struggling with the lack of volume and still want to pass by the mirror and smile! Yes I am the first person to say the beauty comes from the inside. But looking good on the outside sure makes for an easier ride!
Back in the day there was a method called, "Skin Wefting". Wefts of hair were attached to the natural hair with some form of cold fusion. Cold fusion can be liquid adhesives, keratin tape or links/beads.
2012 this method is called "Sticker/Panels/Tape 2 Tape/Skin Wefting/Double Sided Tape Hair". What has changed? The weft now is made in 1.5 inch panels. Pre-tapped and re-usable. When I hear the name sticker hair extensions, I am less than excited. However the concept is there. Imagine a method of hair extensions that are applied "sandwich" style. Each panel marries to the other, with a thin section of the natural hair in between.
I have been wearing this method for the past 2 years. I love the volume this method achieves. Oh and I love that it takes under an hour and re-usable. I have experienced minimal damage. To be honest the damage that is done is because I often go to bed with wet hair. I am a late night bath addict! It's impossible to keep my hair dry!
Maintenance is every 8-10 weeks. The hair (if its the right brand)is re-usable for 8+ months. I have a few clients that have re-used the panels for over a year!

The Long And Short Of It
Hair Extensions are - in my opinion - for everyone! For those who want to add highlights, lowlights, block coloring, volume (don't we all?), a little or a lot of length, wavy or straight texture and for some...fantasy colors.
Fantasy colors for example, are Ravens Fans who wear purple extensions during the football season. Redskins fans rocking the red feathers. For a hot minute feather extensions were the "IT" thing. I have been working with feathers way before they came and left the fashion world. I have always had nothing but love for feathers! How unique, feminine and colorful they are. However, they are not, in my opinion, for everyday wear. Earrings, bracelets, headpieces and clip-ons. Basically, the type you can take on and off. I only know one celebrity who can pull the daily feather extensions off and that is Steven Tyler.
The bottom line is that hair extensions can give you what mother nature didn't. As a professional stylist, I have noticed that there are times when a colorist has not taken the extra steps to protect the integrity of the clients hair. Why over highlight and stack a whole head of foils? Why not use the natural level as a low light and only highlight the crown region?! I could go on but none the less. The long and short of it is this..."Let the Extensions do the work for you!". It saves time, protects the integrity of the natural hair and dare I say...saves money!

A good "head" on my shoulders...
Providing women with the hair they have always dreamed of is an opportunity of a life time. Sure you can say that this is a HUGE exaggeration. However, roll with me here...
If you came to me and said you wanted to lose weight, knowing that I am a BCRPA Certified Trainer. I would guide you to the ways of weight loss that would be healthy, increase your metabolism and practical. I would also kick your butt in the gym. Personal Training was my first real job, or was it my second? I have had so many jobs. I think somewhere in there I worked at McDonalds and Wendy's for a hot minute. I have been working since I was old enough to have a paper route. ANYWAYS.
What I know to be true is this...goals takes time. Plastic surgery we have to heal, actually first we have to save the money. Followed by take time off work, then the surgery and finally healing time. Weight loss is similar. If you want to lose 10 pounds, I am going say give it two weeks and here is the detailed plan. There are no short cuts or overnight success stories in fitness and nutrition.
That said, in less than 2 hours I can change your life. Sure that may seem like a stretch. But I have found this statement to be more true than not. A "bad hair day" turns into being a "bad day". This phrase hit in the 80's. I remember it like it was yesterday. Bad Hair Day hats, t-shirts, websites...
I have never NOT had hair extensions. I actually don't own photos nor have I taken a photo (for that matter) of myself without hair extensions. Call it what you will. I am honest in my lack of confidence with out some type of extension. I have had and worn it all. Weaves, wigs, clip-ons, synthetic bang pieces(huge mistake), wrap around pony's and last but not least...used to make my own fusion hair extensions from bulk hair. Why? Because I have hair of a little girl. My pony tail resembles a 3 year old. Cute on a little girl, not so cute on a 30 something (ok almost 40) year old. The good news of this is...I can relate.
When a female calls, visits or emails and shares her challenges, I instantly want to be the one to give her what God didn't. A Good head of hair! I joke and say that God couldn't' give me this wowing personality and a good head of hair at the same time because it wouldn't be fair to others. This always makes me feel better when I see a gorgeous Brazilian lady walking down the street wearing a size 0 pant and has a full head of gorgeous hair! SO unfair. Why her? How come she has the Victoria Secret hair without the clip-ins that the Victoria Secret models wear to get that hair?!
Ok back to the point...
Once I have provided her with the perfect set of Tresses, blended, cut and styled her hair; she now has volume, length and the hair she always dreamed of. She will walk taller, look and feel younger and have a sense about herself that she didn't have before. Her stress level is minimized and so are the hours she used to spend trying to get ready every day. Trying to manipulate thin fine hair to do "something"/"anything" is a challenge. I have seen the transition with with my own eyes. Phone calls, emails and testimonials back up what I am sharing. The key is selecting the right technique, texture of hair and placement of extensions. Of course always protecting the integrity of the clients hair first and foremost.
Having a good head on my shoulders simply is the new way of turning something negative into a positive. Bad hair days are a thing of the past. We all should have a good head on OUR shoulders. And by that I mean, we all deserve a good head of hair.

Moving on Up
I often wonder if cloning is a bad thing?! Of course I am joking. However, the success of Studio She is fueled by this brain and these two hands/legs.
Our education program teaches the importance of Blogging. I have experienced phone calls from blogs I wrote 5 years ago. Those were the days, when I had adequate time to blog about hair, after care products, extensions, fad diets...
None the less. Big things have been happening and it will take me a few months to get this blog up to par! However, I truly feel blessed for the opportunity to share and empower women who possibly need a little pick me up.
Fast track thru 2011... We have partnered with Hello Gorgeous of HOPE!.
A non profit that selectively joins a kindred-like sister hood/salon with passion to help women feel better during a challenging time in their lives. Letters are written in by family and loved ones. The nomination letters detail the type of Cancer and some basic information. This "Day of Beauty" is truly about celebrating her and her amazing strength. The goal is to do a complete make-over so that she looks and feels great!
Basically, we shut the salon down for half a day. The Nominee has no idea what is in store for her. We turn the salon into a swanky spa. Roll out the Red Carpet, light candles, chocolates hand crafted from "A Perfect Truffle", massage (for some), facial, new outfit, hair and make-up. A welcome committee awaits her arrival with flowers and balloons. I even wear a be-dazzled shirt! (Which, if you knew me, this is not typical of my daily jeans and chucks attire.)
She is then swept away in a limo and taken to our local favorite Italian Restaurant. It has been more than amazing and I look forward to sharing those experiences. Further, I will link those blogs to some of the ladies who have been an integral part of making these "Days of Beauty" a huge success. Our next one in in a few weeks and man-oh-man is she in for a surprise.
I also started the new year with a nice fancy framed award! National Association of Professional Women has honored me "Woman of the Year".
At first, it stayed in my office....in the original box. Slowly it made its way into the front of the salon and now somehow I have managed to put it in the quiet area of the salon. I am honored and humbled. I often get teased as to why I don't hang it by my station (where I spend long days @ Studio She). At the end of the day, I give from my heart. Receiving such an award is like a huge pat on the back OR a possible big hug when I need one.
There is so much more to share...but then again...I truly don't think I could ever run out of things to say when it directly associates my love and passion for my career.
Our education program teaches the importance of Blogging. I have experienced phone calls from blogs I wrote 5 years ago. Those were the days, when I had adequate time to blog about hair, after care products, extensions, fad diets...
None the less. Big things have been happening and it will take me a few months to get this blog up to par! However, I truly feel blessed for the opportunity to share and empower women who possibly need a little pick me up.

Hair Gone Wrong! Hair Extensions drama
Recently I met someone who "appeared" to have great extensions.
As a salon owner/Platinum Extensionist, I was interested in finding out more about her stylist and the method/product used. I was also in desperate need of someone to actually do my hair, that I trusted.
I announced my name to the salon and booked an apt. I was eager to have my own hair done and hopefully, if this was a good thing, have something new to offer at Studio She. I am all about working together - there are enough women who want "good hair days" and I love to share my passion with other stylists.
I drove 2.5 hours to the destination. Finally, I thought I had found someone who has shares the same JOY for extending hair. I was elated to have someone pamper me because usually it is the other way around. Excited to finally have someone do my hair!
4 weeks later - I have spent a little less than $1000.00 and I am totally not satisfied. The hair I am wearing is probably from China. All the silicone that the hair was soaked in has come off, which has led me with hair that knots easy and feels awful. The color matching was less than perfect.
My point is this...there are so many salons out there that claim great reviews. But at the end of the day, when it comes to good hair extensions you have to do your research. The stylist told me that I could re-use this hair - her placement was amazing but what good is placement if the hair is bad quality?
It just makes me wonder - clients - are to make happy and to continue to bring them back over and over again. Trust is a huge word, especially when spending money!

Maryland’s boutique salon, Studio She, in Frederick, MD offers Free Cuts to all who donate 10+ inches of hair to Locks of Love.
This event will benefit Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides vacuum fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-tem medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated human hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns or injuries or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem or other dematological conditions that result in permanent hair loss. The vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape or glue. The prostheses they provide help to restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling these children to face the world and their peers.
The organization which began operation in 1998, provides the prostheses to children, ages 6-18, every 18 months for a total of up to 8 hairpieces. These hairpieces require between 6-10 ponytails and take approximately 4-6 months to manufacture. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrived as a result of national publicity that Locks of Love receives in newspapers, magazines, and televisions programs. It is estimated that children comprise over 80 percent of the donors, making this charity where children have an opportunity to help children.
Donated hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to the following guidelines:
-it must be at least 10”, clean and dry
-it must be bundled in a ponytail or a braid
-bleached hair cannot be used
-hair that has been dyed or permed can be used

There are a large number of hair extension artists claiming to use virgin Indian hair for many hundreds even thousands of dollars, when in actual fact they are selling good quality European hair sourced from donors with origins in South America, Italy, Eurasian ect . This hairs cuticle has been harshly processed to strip out the very thick texture and dark colour pigments. To mimic western hair (Caucasian), the hair is re-tinted using fabric colours not hair colours to achieve the desired shade. Asian Hair Hair sourced from donors of Asian and China donors is a very course hair strand and grows naturally very dark and very straight. The pigments are stripped back to nothing then a short lasting silicon coating is added for a more realistic texture. People only compare prices directly, however volume and durability should also be an important consideration. Chemically treated hair is flat and lifeless needing more hair to produce the same affect as non treated hair. In addition to volume, raw virgin Indian hair will last for years not months so the only cost is the cost a hair extension artist will charge for uplifting the extensions. If hair extension artists or salons claim to offer raw virgin Indian hair but can only guarantee the product for less than six months it is more than likely a false claim.

As we know, Asian hair is NOT like our own. Did you know that Asian hair is put into a chemical bath, which breaks down the cuticle to make the hair thinner and more like our own? It is then, put in a silicone bath which gives it the appearance of healthy looking hair. However, as soon as you wash this hair you will notice that it will soon go back to "wiglike straw looking" hair. As a stylist who has been working with extensions for over 11 years, I find it vital to pass on some ofmy education. I think that it is truly amazing how the industry has grown.Gone are the old days of the hot pot method, glue gun (hate those words). Welcome a new era of Cold fusion, Ceramic Fusion, Links, Shrinkies etc. Not only are my fingers happy that the old method is gone but for my clients they now spend less time in the chair and more time enjoying their new tresses.
Often clients email or phone me and say that they want the best! From all around the US they are in search of a stylist who will not damage their hair and provide them with great extensions. Of course we all want the best but I would like to clarify what makes the best hair extension. Loosely used is the term Remy. It seems that the hype right now is all about Remy. But to a stylist it simply means that the cuticle is going in the same direction.That said the hair should always be Remy. I have noticed some companies really marketing their products because it is Remy. I find it a bit of a marketing ploy because to the unknowing it sounds like you are getting something magical and amazing. Clients are lead to believe that if they buy Remy it won't tangle, mat or become dry. This is misleading. Remy hair comes in Italian, Chinese and European. All hair should be Remy.
For a great set of extensions you want to use good hair. Hair that doesn't tangle and doesn't shed and a bond that won't damage your own hair. I have read nightmare stories on hair forums and it bothers me to still hear of so many bad extension stories. The concept "you get what you pay for" works great...to an extent.
My suggestion is to seek a stylist who has photos. Someone who is passionate about what they can offer you. I truly get excited when I meet a prospective client. Mostly because I know what I can offer them. Be sure he/she is certified OR has the credentials to back the talent up. I also think it is great when the stylist is actually wearing extensions. This way they understand exactly what it is like when you lose an extensions, what it is like to take care for them etc.
Also, ask to see the hair. You will want to see it, touch it and ask questions about the hair. Where does it come from? What ingredients make up the bonding agent? Will it tangle? Shed? Is there any type of glue in the keratin bond? What is needed to take out the extensions? I also suggest finding out what type of maintenance plan you need and how often they suggest coming to visit their salon.

Top 10 Reasons why Women Lose Their Hair
If your hair is thinning or falling out, you are probably anxious to find out why. Is hair loss due to heredity, childbirth, stress or some other factor? Approximately 90% of your hair is growing at any one time, while the other 10% enter a resting phase. Every two to three months the resting hair falls out and allows new hair to grow in its place.
We constantly hear about the challenge of men's hair loss, all of the products they offer, and what they can do about it. However, women struggle through the same problems every day, which I don't believe society is as well aware of. In many situations, the causes are recognizable and treatable, and there are many things that contribute to each. This is a continuing problem, affecting some thirty something million women just in the United States.
Women as early of an age as fifteen and sixteen are finding themselves developing a hair loss challenge, which isn't totally common, but it's not unheard of. Remember- It is so very important to get the right diagnosis from a physician before attempting any form of treatment on your own.
ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA or FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS Women automatically are born to have a low amount of testosterone, and when that comes in contact with the enzymes in the hair cell, it changes it's make up to an androgen DHT, (dihydrotestosterone) which attaches to receptors low into the hair follicle. This same process repeated overtime causes excessive build-up of DHT in the hair follicle, causing it to shrink, which conflicts with the natural process of growth in the hair itself. Depending on each specific case of androgenic alopecia, some or many of the follicles eventually die and some become unable to produce or maintain normal hair growth. Alopecia can be stress-induced or genetic.
Other Hair Loss Factors:
TEMPORARY HAIR LOSS Even when it's not obtained naturally or genetically, hair loss can occur in any women at any age, majorly depending on what is occurring at that time of the individual's life. Changes in the hair growth can begin following:

Low iron content: Hair requires high levels of regular nutrients for proper development and growth. When women go through the changing process of their menstruation cycles, iron levels are frequently less then desired, and the fundamental mineral is often a contributing cause for hair loss.
Hyperthyroid Disorders: When the body is in crisis, the cells of the hair are able to shut themselves down to put their energy to use somewhere else in the body.
Drinking Alcohol: Excessive drinking affects your diet and vitamin count which has the ability to cause hair loss. There are stress reactions that can promote hair loss after heavy alcohol consumption; the more alcohol intake, the increased amount of stress put on your body. This heavily affects the liver, which is a critical organ within the hormones in your body.
Smoking: Cigarette smoke has a large impact on the hair follicle. Smoke can have up to 4,000 damaging chemicals that can cause hair loss, breakage, dullness, and not to mention a not so great smell. Smoke cancels the flow of an important amount of oxygen and nutrients through your bloodstream, and when hair is denied its proper amount of important nutrition, it promotes unhealthy tresses and breakage. If you're looking for shimmering shine and healthy hair, talk to your physician about quitting smoking immediately for the sake of your hair, and importantly overall health.
Stress: Yes, Stress. They say it isn't stress that kills but it is how you deal with stress that kills. Well, stress can also contribute to hair loss. Our bodies react differently and at times, surprisingly. The dictionary defines stress as a "demand upon physical or mental energy". Stress puts demands on people to perform well above their capacity. Stress happens to all of us, typically each day. Stress can also be related to change.
Hair loss influenced by stress usually occurs after severe stress, such as surgery or illness. This is referred to telogen effluvium. It takes about 6 months to a year to reverse the signs.
Pregnancy: Hair loss that is connected to pregnancy usually occurs after delivery. During pregnancy, an increased number of hairs go into the resting phase, which is part of the normal hair loss cycle. This condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, and should begin to diminish within 3-4 months after delivery. If you feel that you are experiencing unusual hair loss while you are pregnant, this may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency.

How do I Care for my extensions?
It is completely possible to have undetectable free flowing hair. Maintenance is required to to keep the extensions looking their best. We have to feed and care for the hair to maintain lustre and shine. It is possible to have healthy hair with extensions. Just as it is possible to have healthy looking extensions. It is a give and take relationship.
It is very important that you treat your hair as an investment. This means that if you want the "life" out of your hair you need to take care of it. Hair is dead...so unless you treat it right you won't get the bang for your buck! Simply put, I know who takes care of them and who doesn't. The choice is up to you. I've seen both sides of the spectrum and when a guest has issues with her extensions it typically is because he/she didn't follow this outline.
From the beginning...
Before washing your hair it is most important that you brush your hair first. This also includes swimming or anything to do with water and your hair extensions. With a Professional Extension brush not a comb. A comb should never be used on dry hair nor should a brush be used on wet.
If you forget to brush your hair before washing...you are potentially putting water into a knot. By the time you get to combing your wet hair you will notice it can be impossible to get the knots out. This is because you missed this one step.
As always, brushing starts from the bottom up. If you start any higher in your head you will just be brushing more hair into a previously started knot. As your hair grows brushing will be an important part of your maintenance. If you don't brush at least 2ce per day you will notice matting etc. If you don't want dreads to start or if you want to minimize breakage this step is imperative.
Washing: All products used on extensions must be oil free. Oil is the enemy with extensions and will cause the bond to slip. I do understand that some clients want to deep condition their hair while they are wearing hair extensions. The choice is up to you, but just know that you will have to visit the salon more often if you choose to do your own thing. Products are a very important part of your investment. The wrong products can dry out and create loss of extensions. I suggest MLT or So.Cap 4 U products. Both are created solely for extensions.
Your hair is only to be cleansed on the roots. Conditioner is for the ends. You don't need to waste product by using both products on the wrong area. Not to mention that conditioner will weigh down fine hair. Do not wash your hair upside down or try to create any type of flood water. This can cause the hair to tangle.
After washing, gently rub off excess water and let hair air dry for 10+ mins. By doing this you are letting the water evaporate a bit so that if any tangles were created while washing, you will not be brushing more hair and water into the knot. This also helps prevent damage because your hair can stretch when wet and for some females that means your hair will break off. You will also want to use a reg. or diluted conditioning spray by Long Tresses or So.Cap. You can not use any aftercare products that have oil. There isn't anyway around this. Only use professional after care created for extensions.
Gently comb wet hair with a wide tooth comb.
Styling: I suggest using a heat protectant spray. When it comes to using heat you have only one option when it comes to styling tools. If you must blow dry then you should stay away from using a flat iron/curling iron etc. If you plan on using heat, let your hair air dry first and then finish it off with the use of a tool. This will keep the extensions in great shape and increase the longevity of your investment.

Sleeping:
Never go to bed with wet hair. This is a big NO and will totally cause your hair to matt. It is the best thing for your hair (and face) to invest in a silk pillowcase. Trust me, if I learned this trick years ago... it is also suggested that you wear a low braid so that your hair doesn't get tangled. And don't forget to brush hair before bed.
Activities such as the gym, swimming etc. It is personal preference if you decide to wash your hair everyday. It can dry out your hair extensions. It is important though to rinse your hair after each time you go swimming/hot tub/ocean. I also suggest using a spray in conditioner by Long Tresses or So.Cap.
Chemicals and Extensions If you require color you can only use demi-permanent color. Even using a demi can harm some types of extentions. A strand test is always best. I have seen good and bad things happen it just depends on what was done to the hair prior to it being shipped to the salon.
I have great things to say about Paul Mitchell Shines or any type of cylophane shine that you can create and custom color for your clients. It is enough to feed the cuticle and give the hair back what it lost.
Highlights can be done to but only to the clients own hair. Typically the mohawk area/upper parital ridge area.
It is NOT recommended that you color your hair yourself. Box color acts as a glue/type layer and will coat the hair rather than penetrate. This also makes it harder to correct.
